TELUK HOUSE, KRUI
A surf house cut into the cliff above the point at Krui, South Lampung. Three bedrooms, a locked board store, an outdoor rinse deck, and the whole line-up in sight before you wax up.
Teluk House sits on the low cliff above the reef at Karang Nyimbor, four minutes down the steps from the keyhole. Three bedrooms, two bathrooms, and one long louvred living room that faces the swell. The house was built by surfers for surfers: a locked board store off the rinse deck, fresh water at the door, reef booties in the cupboard, and a caretaker who knows which tide the left starts working on. April to October brings the size and the offshore mornings. The quiet months are smaller, cheaper, and often glassy at first light.
Three bedrooms and two bathrooms open onto a single louvred living room, with a covered board store beside the rinse deck. The whole house goes to one group at a time, 2–6 guests.

Nine days, seven of them surfed. The board store alone is worth the booking: racked, locked, and two steps from the rinse hose, so nothing sandy ever came inside. Rio walked us down to the keyhole on the first morning and told us to wait forty minutes for the tide, and he was right. The Ocean Room really does show you the whole line-up, which is dangerous if you were planning a rest day. Kitchen is properly equipped, the ice never ran out, and the grill on the deck handled everything we bought at the morning market.

Simple, solid, exactly what a surf house should be. Louvres open, fans on, no need for the AC until bedtime. The cliff deck is where we ended up every evening.

We booked the whole house for six and it worked out cheaper than two rooms in town, with a far better set-up. Three bedrooms means nobody gets woken by the dawn crew, and the twin room was fine for the two of us who were mostly here to snorkel. Honest note for anyone new to the reef here: wear the booties, the takeoff is shallow at low tide and the house keeps spares for a reason. Also bring more zinc than you think. The rinse deck and the drying line dealt with the salt properly, which after a week of two sessions a day matters more than anything else in the house. We are already talking about the same week next year.

Clips from the house and the point. Swell, wind, and what the reef actually looks like at six in the morning.
